Working at NewRiver

NewRiver Employee Benefits

March 2020

Introduction from our Head of HR

Edith Monfries

At NewRiver we know that the success of the company comes from the people within our team. Since our formation in 2009 we have worked hard to create a collaborative culture for our employees that promotes teamwork, personal development and long-term career fulfilment within a friendly and supportive working environment.

As Head of HR for the NewRiver group I am proud of the collegiate and mutually supportive culture we have fostered here at NewRiver. We have high staff retention and a reputation for attracting talented and ambitious new joiners and see our greatest achievements in enabling our team to unlock their full potential. As a company, we are passionate about what we do and the sector we operate in, and we are pleased to say that NewRiver has a reputation in the industry for being a great place to work.

We have a wealth of benefits in place that underpin all of this which are outlined below, and we continue to strive to improve these year on year.

We are committed to ensuring our policies enable all our staff to choose what is best for them, particularly in offering enhanced shared parental leave. Becoming a working mother of two children in the late eighties myself, the practices and policies available to families were not as flexible as they can be today and so this is an area which I am passionate about developing as we seek to enable all our talented team to develop their careers in the way they choose in conjunction with a healthy and happy work life balance.

Our Policies and Benefits

Training & Development

We are committed to maximising the skills, capability and performance of all employees. We provide all employees with the opportunity to develop themselves and progress in their careers. Our support ranges from funding professional qualifications including RICS and ACCA to informal weekly training sessions and talks over a healthy breakfast once a month from industry experts on a wide range of topics.

During the course of FY19 87% of our team received training. In addition, all employees benefit from a tailored performance review and professional development plan, which allows them to measure their progress and fulfil their potential.

Internal talent development is an important focus for NewRiver, seeking to nurture individuals and help them achieve their potential and ambition. This doesn’t just include promotion into more senior roles but has included opportunities for employees to change teams within the company enabling them to take on new challenges and flex their skills in other areas of the business.

We offer an Apprenticeship Scheme which provides us the opportunity to nurture and develop entry level employees at the outset of their career.

Health & Wellbeing

We recognise that our people are our greatest asset and we are committed to improving the quality of our employees working lives by providing a safe and healthy working environment. Our aim is to create a positive working environment by integrating wellbeing in all work activities and by empowering our people to make positive choices regarding their health and wellbeing.

NewRiver’s 54 head office staff in London and satellite offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester, play an integral role in our business, and their wellbeing is a top priority for us. In FY18 NewRiver launched a staff wellbeing programme which includes various initiatives including encouraging physical activities, supporting flexible working and providing healthy food options including daily fruit baskets and non-dairy milk options as well as the standard variety of teas and coffees. Periodically, we get the whole team together for a seasonal lunch which allows for socialising during the working day rather than always hosting social events in evenings when people may prefer to be with their families or friends.

Mental Health

We have enrolled in a campaign called “This is me”, a business led campaign to support organisations and their employees to talk about mental health. It encourages people with experience of mental health problems, whether their own or those of a loved one, to share their stories and end the stigma around mental health issues. To support this initiative, we have a number of trained Mental Health First Aiders across our business.

Thrive at Work

Our aim in FY20 is to implement more activities which will help to foster a healthier working environment. We are participating in “Thrive at Work”, a programme seeking the highest level of accreditation to demonstrate our commitment to employee health and wellbeing.

Physical Environment

Our office layout is open-plan to allow for a more collegiate working dynamic and provide accessibility to management at all levels. The office spaces in both the London and Birmingham offices are bright, modern and stylish with plenty of areas for breakout sessions or space to enjoy a catch up with a colleague over lunch or read a few more pages of your current book or listen to a podcast.

As a Company, we are committed to a culture of diversity and inclusion in which everyone is given equal opportunities to progress regardless of gender, race, ethnic origin, nationality, age, religion, sexual orientation or disability.
