Sovereign Shopping Centre Wins Green Apple Award for Waste & Recycling Transformation
The Sovereign Shopping Centre has been recognised with a prestigious Green Apple Award for its innovative approach to waste reduction, recycling and tenant engagement. Through a collaborative partnership with waste management specialist Futur First, the centre has transformed its environmental performance while reducing operational costs and supporting the local economy.
The team adopted a phased programme focused on understanding waste streams, improving segregation and engaging tenants in a shared sustainability goal. Detailed waste audits identified opportunities to increase recycling and reduce contamination, leading to the introduction of dedicated recycling streams for dry mixed recycling, food waste, glass and poly film, alongside existing cardboard recycling.
The results have been significant. The centre has increased its recycling rate from 32% to over 52%, diverting approximately 64 tonnes of material from disposal while achieving zero waste to landfill. By switching to local waste contractors, waste transport miles have also been reduced by more than 47%, further lowering environmental impacts.
A key factor in the project's success has been its focus on people. Through regular tenant engagement, clear recycling guidance and staff training, the centre has created a culture where sustainability is everyone's responsibility. The partnership has demonstrated that meaningful environmental improvements do not require significant investment, but rather collaboration, education and a shared commitment to doing the right thing.
The team continues to build on this success, aiming to increase recycling rates beyond 60% while further improving waste management performance across the centre. The Green Apple Award recognises not only the environmental achievements delivered to date, but also the long-term commitment of the Sovereign Shopping Centre team, its tenants and partners to creating a more sustainable future.
