NewRiver submits plans to bring Aldi to Market Deeping

NewRiver has submitted a planning application to create a new Aldi store at its shopping centre, The Deepings, in Market Deeping.

Proposals would transform the former Poundstretcher unit to provide a new grocery offer for the town centre, creating a 24,000 sq ft Aldi store, marking a significant step forward in bringing a long-awaited supermarket back to the town centre and delivering on the asset management strategy for the asset.

Plans include the comprehensive refurbishment and repurposing of the former Poundstretcher store to create a modern Aldi store in the town centre, strengthening the retail offer at The Deepings and helping drive increased footfall. The proposed redevelopment includes the removal of the existing first-floor structure, the creation of a new delivery bay and loading facilities, external building improvements, new customer entrances and glazing, car park enhancements and the installation of rooftop solar panels to improve the building's environmental performance.

Subject to planning approval, works are expected to commence in early 2027, with Aldi targeting an opening in 2028. The proposal forms part of Aldi's ambitious UK expansion programme; earlier in the year, Aldi announced plans to invest a record £1.6 billion over the next two years (2026-27), opening 80 stores as sales continue to rise.

Aldi has signed an Agreement for Lease for the 24,000 sq ft unit on a 20-year term with Aldi taking occupation of the unit in the second half of 2027 following the completion of landlord works.

The plans reinforce NewRiver's commitment to invest in its portfolio of essential, everyday destinations and work with leading retailers to enhance its destinations, support local economies and create sustainable long-term growth.

Will Wood, Asset Manager at NewRiver, said: "At NewRiver, we are focused on creating thriving, convenient destinations that serve the everyday needs of local communities, and provide locals with greater choice and value. Bringing Aldi to Market Deeping would be a great example of that strategy in action, creating a much-needed supermarket offer and breathing new life into The Deepings as part of our asset management strategy for the centre.

“This proposal represents a significant investment in the town centre and demonstrates our commitment to actively managing and improving our assets to meet the needs of local communities. Aldi is one of the UK's most successful retailers and an excellent fit for The Deepings, creating a stronger retail offer while increasing footfall and supporting local businesses."

Mark Stringer, Real Estate Director at Aldi, said: "We're really excited about the opportunity to bring Aldi to Market Deeping. We know that local residents have been asking for an Aldi store in the town for many years, so it is fantastic to now be bringing forward proposals at The Deepings.

"We believe The Deepings is a great location for a new Aldi store, complementing the existing retail offer, supporting footfall into the town centre and giving local people greater choice, convenience and value. The proposed new Aldi store represents a significant investment in Market Deeping and would create up to 40 new local jobs, while giving residents easier access to Aldi's award-winning range of high-quality, affordable groceries.

"Alongside creating up to 40 new jobs, this would mean more residents can shop with Aldi closer to home."

Cllr Ashley Baxter, Leader of South Kesteven District Council, said: "I am delighted that plans for a new Aldi in Market Deeping are moving forward. For a number of years I have actively supported efforts to bring a supermarket back to the town centre and I am pleased to see these proposals coming to life.

“A town centre supermarket will give residents greater choice and convenience, while helping to increase footfall for other local businesses and creating new jobs for local people. I am particularly pleased that Aldi plans to reuse an existing building within the town centre. This means the existing petrol station can be retained which will enable residents to fill up their shopping trolleys and their petrol tanks in a single trip. I look forward to seeing the proposals progress through the planning process."
